How to Factory Reset an Android Phone Before Selling

A factory reset removes your accounts, apps, photos, and settings from an Android device. Protect your data and get your phone ready for its next owner.

Step 1

Before Resetting

  • Back up important files.
  • Remove any Google accounts if possible.
  • Make sure you know your Google login information.
Step 2

Reset Through Settings

Most Android phones follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap Reset Options.
  4. Select Erase All Data (Factory Reset).
  5. Confirm your choice.
  6. Enter your PIN or password.

The phone will restart and erase all data.

Step 3

If You Can't Access Settings

You can reset using Recovery Mode:

  1. Turn the phone off.
  2. Hold the Power button and Volume Up button (varies by manufacturer).
  3. Enter Recovery Mode.
  4. Use volume buttons to select Wipe Data/Factory Reset.
  5. Confirm with the Power button.
  6. Restart the phone.

Important Note

Many Android devices use Factory Reset Protection (FRP). After resetting, you may need the previously linked Google account to activate the phone again.
