How to Factory Reset a Windows PC Before Selling It

Factory resetting a Windows computer removes your personal files and restores the operating system. Protect your data and get your device ready for its next owner.

Step 1

Before You Begin

  • Back up important files.
  • Sign out of Microsoft accounts if possible.
  • Make sure you have any software license keys you may need later.
Step 2

Reset Windows from Settings

Windows 10 and Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Click Recovery.
  4. Choose Reset this PC.
  5. Select Remove Everything.
  6. Follow the instructions.

Windows will reinstall itself and remove your data.

Step 3

Factory Reset Using Advanced Startup

If Windows won't boot properly:

  1. Turn the computer off.
  2. Turn it on and interrupt startup three times.
  3. Windows should load Advanced Startup Options.
  4. Alternatively, hold Shift while clicking Restart.

From Advanced Startup:

  1. Select Troubleshoot.
  2. Click Reset This PC.
  3. Choose Remove Everything.
  4. Follow the prompts.
Step 4

Accessing BIOS or Boot Menu

Some repairs or reinstallations require entering the boot menu.

Common keys include:

  • F2
  • F10
  • F12
  • ESC
  • DEL

Press the appropriate key immediately after powering on the computer.

Step 5

Reinstall Windows from a USB Drive

If needed:

  1. Create a Windows installation USB.
  2. Enter the Boot Menu.
  3. Select the USB drive.
  4. Follow the installation prompts.
  5. Delete existing partitions if you want a completely fresh installation.
